Update on bomb threat at AHS

Students at Algona High School were allowed to enter the building this morning via the high school office entrance after a bomb threat was determined yesterday afternoon. Superintendent Marty Fonley says the book and equipment bags of some 429 students were searched and the last of the students entered the building at 8:45 A.M. Fonley says he briefed students in the gym at 8:55 and some rescheduling took place so the rest of the day could go on as usual. It was not specifically disclosed what type of bomb threat was discovered. An investigation will be ongoing with more information pending. Algona Police Chief Kevin Bangart says some seven officers and Matt the bomb sniffing dog was used for the first time locally. A uniformed officer was on the premises today and also tomorrow when the school will host a volleyball invite, fans will come and go via the office entrance, the rest of the doors will be locked. Superintendent Fonley says the building normally is wide open and free movement in the aftermath of the bomb threat was restricted. A decision on how to handle Monday and next week has yet to be made. Last night the volleyball team was not allowed in the building at the end of a road trip, the coach had to take equipment home, after football practice players were allowed to drop off equipment, pick up keys and go.
